4. Dion Waiters, PG, Miami Heat

All the Dion Waiters’ apologists are going to be furious that he’s on the list for the most overrated free agents. Yes, Waiters had a career year statistically and yes he’s only 25 years old. But Waiters’ run at the end of this season isn’t sustainable for the duration of a contract.

Waiters actually had a player option for 2017-18 and decided to exercise it, making him a free agent this summer. That’s the right move financially because it’ll give him the biggest payday possible. But teams shouldn’t be fooled by the stats he threw up with the Miami Heat, they should look at the entire body of work in his career.

This past season with the Heat, Waiters averaged 15.8 points and 4.3 assists on 42 percent shooting from the field. All of those numbers are career-highs or the highest since his second season in the NBA with the Cleveland Cavaliers. But here’s the flaw, Waiters only played in 46 games with the Heat and averaged the most minutes per game in his career. So it’s a small sample size in terms of number of games and the statistics are inflated due to the number of minutes per game.

In terms of shooting, Waiters still shoots 42 percent from the field, which is among the worst for shooting guards in the NBA. The Miami Heat shooting guard had a great run during the end of the season, where he hit clutch shots in wins against the Cleveland Cavaliers and Golden State Warriors.

Don’t be blinded by those late-game heroics, Waiters has never been known to be an efficient scorer or a play-maker for his teammates. Although he had his best season yet with the Miami Heat, I don’t think it’ll be repeatable.
