17. Francis Martes

The Astros have already called up their top pitching prospect, but they will need more mound reinforcements to cement their status as top World Series contender. Their mini slump with Dallas Keuchel and Lance McCullers on the DL underscored their need for more depth in the rotation. They remain a top contender for Jose Quintana or Gerrit Cole.

Francis Martes is Houston’s top-ranked prospect and the number-three right-handed prospect across all of MLB. He was knocked around in relief in his MLB debut on June 9, giving up four runs in 3.2 innings. He has since moved into the rotation and pitched much better.

Martes was a great find for the Astros front office when they grabbed him from the depths of the Miami Marlins farm system in the Jarred Cosart trade. He can touch 98 with his fastball, which has good movement and life. Martes also throws a power curveball that has good depth. He has drawn comparisons to McCullers in the minor leagues and has room to improve his curve.

Houston’s willingness to trade Martes may hinge on how Keuchel’s recovery from a nerve injury in his neck progresses leading up to the trade deadline. It is still uncertain when the frontrunner for the AL Cy Young will return.
