NBA Free Agency 2017: 5 offseason targets for the Miami Heat
By Ynal Al-Ouri
2. Dion Waiters
Another Heat player makes the list, Dion Waiters put on a show and made everyone believers in him last season. He wasn’t expected to do a whole lot last season, as Miami only signed him to a one-year deal worth around $2.8 million. Boy did that prove to be a bargain. It seemed like Waiters was the Heat’s leading scorer most nights, and he even hit some bone chilling game winners that left everyone in awe.
He played so well last season that some Heat fans were saying “Wait-County” instead of “Wade-County” to honor Waiters. Now of course Waiters is no Dwyane Wade, but it definitely gave Heat fans something to cheer about through a difficult time for them. Aside from his scoring, Waiters averaged a career high 4.3 assists per game, and proved that he can play either guard position as the team needed.
Waiters also recorded his highest PER of his career last season, at 14.61. Although he missed a chunk of last season due to injury, he did more than enough to warrant consideration for Miami to resign him. He will certainly be commanding a huge pay day, and it remains to be seen if they are willing to shell out big bucks his way. Waiters has expressed his desire to resign with the Heat, so it will be a storyline worth following once free agency officially begins on July 1.
