UConn women’s basketball

You were expecting the Hartford Whalers? The women’s basketball team at the University of Connecticut is simply unmatched anywhere in the country when it comes to success over the last three decades.

The Huskies won their first NCAA Tournament in 1995, and now have 11 banners hanging from the rafters at Harry A. Gampel Pavilion. UConn’s women’s team has been to 18 Final Fours since head coach Geno Auriemma took over the program 32 years ago, and all have come since 1991. The Huskies, who began play in 1974, didn’t even reach the NCAA tournament for the first time until 1989, meaning Auriemma practically built the program from scratch.

Since taking over the program in 1985, Auriemma has posted a 991-135 (.880) overall record. UConn failed to post a winning record only once during his tenure, when his first team finished 12-15 – which at the time was the second best season in school history. The Huskies now have 27 20-win seasons, 22 30-win campaigns (including 12 in a row), and six teams were undefeated. The 2014 national championship squad was a perfect 40-0.

The list goes on. From 2008-10, UConn won 90 consecutive games, which set an NCAA record for the longest in college basketball history. After a loss to Stanford during the 2014-15 season, the Huskies went on a roll of 111 consecutive victories to smash their previous record.

However, it’s worth pointing out that the program lost the last time it took the court. Mississippi State shocked the Huskies with an overtime buzzer-beater during the 2017 Final Four. The loss broke a string of four straight UConn national championships.
