Marlins Get
OF Juan Soto
RHP Joan Baez
Nationals Get
RHP AJ Ramos

Why the Marlins should do it: The Marlins are a bit of a mess right now. Their starting pitching is a mess. After the awful death of Jose Fernandez, they really didn’t have anyone to replace him. They gave Wei-Yin Chen a huge contract and he’s been injured. Tom Koehler and Adam Conley didn’t take the next step. That’s put some strain on the bullpen.

On top of that, ownership is trying to sell the team and the farm system is lacking. They can afford to move their closer, A.J. Ramos and pick up a couple of prospects, albeit in the lower minors. Soto and Baez are both in A ball, but the real prize is Soto, who is among the top 100 prospects in the game today. It upgrades the Marlins’ system and they can fill in the closer role with one of their other relievers.

Why the Nationals should do it: The Nationals need a closer. They’ve struggled so much they’ve even given Francisco Rodriguez a minor league deal with hopes they can catch lightning in a bottle and maybe resurrect K-Rod’s career. Ramos won’t be a free agent until after next season, so the Nats won’t have to worry about their closer role for the remainder of this year and next. While they give up Soto, they still hang onto Victor Robles, one of the top prospects in all of baseball.
