Why the Blue Jays should do it: The Blue Jays are still in the race even though they are at the bottom of the American League East. In this scenario, I have them as buyers because of it. One spot they could use some help in is second base. Devon Travis had knee surgery and may be done for the rest of the season.

Enter Jed Lowrie, who can move all over the infield if need be and gives the Jays another switch-hitting bat to add to a lineup that is full of power when right. If the Jays want to keep him after this season, they even have an option for him next year as insurance if Travis isn’t quite healthy next year or at any other infield spot.

Why the A’s should do it: It’s time for Chad Pinder and Franklin Barreto to man the middle infield in Oakland. The A’s have been calling up young players of late like Barreto and Matt Chapman and giving them long looks in a season that has been lost for them. They need to know what they have in the kids.

By clearing out Lowrie, it gives them an opportunity to do just that. Think of it last year when the Yankees sat Mark Teixeira and Brian McCann and gave guys like Aaron Judge and Gary Sanchez their shot. They’ve reaped the benefits of that this year and Oakland wants to see if they can follow suit with the youngsters that they are giving chances to.
