NBA Free Agency 2017: One signing every team should make
Philadelphia 76ers: Dion Waiters
Despite the deserved excitement around the Philadelphia 76ers heading into the 2017-18 season with their core of Joel Embiid, Ben Simmons, Dario Saric and 2017’s No. 1 overall pick Markelle Fultz, the Sixers still need to build a more complete roster moving forward. One of the biggest things that they need to add in free agency is a wing that can score from the outside and provide the offense with quality shooting.
One name that has been connected to the Sixers recently has been J.J. Redick. Considering their need, Redick would make a ton of sense in Philadelphia. He’s a veteran presence and a lethal outside shooter with the savvy to complement what the 76ers have quite well. However, the downside with Redick is that he’s largely a short-term option for them. As this youthful group still has room to go, that might not be the best kind of addition to look to make. Alternatively, Dion Waiters would be a more viable long-term asset.
Throughout his time with both the Cavaliers and Thunder, Waiters was largely a punch line. However, that narrative changed with the Miami Heat this past season as he enjoyed easily his best season as a pro. Now at 25 years old, he looks to have finally found his niche in the league. More importantly for the Sixers’ cause, he’s finally found his stroke, hitting on 39.5 percent of his 3-point attempts this past season. Adding that type of explosive offensive player to the young core in Philadelphia could be a great move.
Plus, who doesn’t want to have Embiid and Waiters on the same team? That should be the dream of every NBA fan, frankly.
