NBA Free Agency 2017: 5 offseason targets for the Orlando Magic
By Dave Daniels
4. Kyle Lowry
Kyle Lowry has come up short for the Toronto Raptors many times, and a change of scenery might be just what he needs. His team lost in the playoffs for the second season in a row against the Cleveland Cavaliers. Lowry has the ability to be a star, but he doesn’t always seem to have the ability do it consistently. The Magic would love to have a veteran like him teach Payton the nuances of the game, and it would give the young point guard time to develop. Lowry averaged an impressive 22.4 points, 4.8 rebounds and 7.0 assists per game last year.
Those numbers are eye-popping, but something tells me he can improve even more. Lowry will most likely stay in Toronto, because that team gave him his first opportunity to be featured in a starring role. But the Magic front office wouldn’t be doing their job if didn’t try to sign him. He would certainly be a significant upgrade over Payton. Lowry has sometimes been misunderstood as a player who doesn’t care enough, but that isn’t a fair assessment of him. He never got a decent shake until he landed in Toronto. And he has proven to be a quality point guard in this league that is currently full of them. The Magic would be lucky to have him.
