1. Brooklyn Nets

With a lack of high first-round picks in recent years to bring an influx of youth, via an ill-fated trade with the Boston Celtics, no team in the league needs more talent than the Nets do right now. A recent trade that brought D’Angelo Russell from the Los Angeles Lakers is a step in the right direction, but more is obviously needed.

Sending Brook Lopez and the No. 27 pick in last week’s draft to the Lakers, while bringing back Russell and Timofey Mozgov, was essentially a lateral move from a salary cap perspective for the Nets. But they have plenty of room to sign a significant free agent, even a restricted free agent who would require a substantial offer sheet like Porter will. The real question is if anyone will take Brooklyn’s money to play for a rebuilding team. But someone surely will, and general manager Sean Marks should be looking for young players that can be considered NBA veterans.

Porter may want to move to a bigger market like New York, with a nice long-term contract and a primary role. It’s not completely in his hands where he goes, if Washington chooses to match an offer sheet. But the Nets can promise plenty of touches, along with the kind of offer sheet the Wizards simply can’t responsibly match.
