MLB Trade Deadline 2017: 5 best spots for Giancarlo Stanton
3. Houston Astros
If you’ve never been to Minute Maid Park or are unfamiliar with its dimensions, allow me to bring you up to speed. In an effort to give their new (at the time) Enron Field an “old-timey” feel, the Astros artificially built a ton of quirky dimensions and features into their new dome. Sadly, the hill and in-play flagpole in center field have been removed, but the Crawford Boxes still rise in left field a short 315 feet away, with a wall that is quite shorter than the Green Monster in Fenway Park.
Obviously, Stanton’s power plays in any ballpark, but the bombs he would hit in Minute Maid Park are enough to have me trying to dream this trade into reality.
Picturing Stanton in the same lineup with Jose Altuve, Carlos Correa, George Springer, Yuli Gurriel, and Marwin Gonzalez has me light-headed just thinking about all of the dingers. The Astros are one of few teams in the league right now with the financial means to take on Stanton’s $325-million contract and the prospects to interest the Marlins.
Pitching is still the primary need for the Astros, and that is where their focus should be first at the deadline. Stanton is more likely to be dealt over the winter, if at all, and the Astros should be expected to be a major player if trade talks heat up.
