MLB Trade Deadline 2017: 5 best spots for Matt Carpenter
By John Buhler
Like the San Francisco Giant, the Philadelphia Phillies stink. They will be the last team in baseball to eclipse 30 wins this season, whatever day in mid-July that will happen. A few thought the Phillies were done being horrible in the post World Series swoon, but 2016 might have been an anomaly.
Outside of a player or two, the Phillies are not reaping the benefits from their farm system and it is costing them dearly. All their former stars are gone and it’s sad. It’s hard to really figure out where exactly this awful baseball team should go than to rebuild its farm system once again and just start over.
While we can expect the Phillies to be a seller during the MLB trade deadline, what exactly do they have to sell? Shouldn’t they almost package together a deal to get a reliable veteran that can fill a lot holes in a guy like Carpenter? Sure, it’s a stretch, but Carpenter could see a renaissance at the plate playing in a launching pad in Citizens Bank Park for the Phillies.
Philadelphia should not expect him to walk into to town as the next Chase Utley, but the Phillies could be getting a few All-Star level years out of Carpenter before he hits his mid-30s. The most important thing will be to put him at one infield position, keep him there and let the dude get back to making sweet contact with that lovely bat of his.
