The Nationals stormed out to a huge division lead in April and haven’t looked back, finishing the first half with a 9.5-game lead in the NL East, which is the biggest in the NL and second largest in baseball.

Led by a trio of MVP candidates – Bryce Harper, Ryan Zimmerman and Daniel Murphy – Washington finished the first half with the highest scoring offense in the National League. The Nats also had two of the best starters in the league in Max Scherzer, who finished 10-5 with a 2.10 ERA and 173 strikeouts (most in the NL) in 128.1 innings across 18 starts, and Gio Gonzalez, who was 7-4 with a 2.86 ERA and 110 K’s in 113.1 innings.

Of course, thanks to the worst bullpen in the major leagues, statistically speaking, the Nationals have been less than dominant in recent weeks. Over the last calendar month, Washington is 13-15 overall.
