3. Players Under Team Control

Colorado is hot right now, and they’re young. That’s the best combination to hope for. Bud Black has been using his pitching experience to guide the team to success in ways he couldn’t when he was with the Padres. With that in mind, if nothing changes after 2017, the Rockies will only continue to heat up.

Focusing their trade goals on players under team control will allow for short and long term growth. These players will be able to step in and make an impact now, but they’ll also be around in the future. Three names pop up who could fit this bill: Chris Archer (Tampa Bay), Jose Quintana (White Sox) and Marcus Stroman (Blue Jays)

All three players are likely available in the trade this year and they have multiple years remaining in their contracts. That makes them ideal candidates for the Rockies, who are looking for consistency in the roster to allow for a strong foundation.

Inking one of these three players will likely require big players in return, but the Rockies have the enviable depth to allow for trades like that to happen.
