Derwin James, S, Florida State

It’s a question of health rather than ability for James, who has a strong case as the most talented overall player in college football when at full strength.

James joined Florida State in 2015 as the nation’s top-rated defensive back and No. 4 overall recruit, ranking just ahead of McFadden. Unlike McFadden, James made an immediate and massive impact as a true freshman, racking up 91 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks, four pass defenses and a pair of forced fumbles.

The most glaring trait that jumps out about James is his versatility, which award voters will take note of if Jabrill Peppers’ success last year is any indication. James not only excels in coverage, but finds himself in the opponent’s backfield while lining up often on the line of scrimmage, is terrific at identifying run or pass before the snap, and can spy the opposing quarterback  if needed.

With tons of hype surrounding him, James got off to a great start in 2016 with 11 tackles and an interception in two games before suffering a season-ending meniscus tear. While that can be a tricky injury to recover from, he returned to the field this spring, and James has all the potential to be the best player on what could be the best defense in the country.

James’ first game back will pose a major challenge, as he will be asked to contain Alabama quarterback Jalen Hurts on scrambles. If the Seminoles can pull out a win to begin a season with playoff potential, James will be at the forefront of the Nagurski race while generating some Heisman buzz.
