In the mid-2000s under then head coach Chris Petersen, the Boise State Broncos began to emerge as a mid-major power in the college football ranks. Boise State just did not stop winning on that blue smurf turf of theirs and the college football world had to start taking notice on what was going down in the Idaho capital.
The Broncos were undefeated during the 2006 season, but didn’t get a shot at winning a national title that year due to an inferior schedule. Instead, they had to play one of the bluest of blue-bloods in the 2007 Fiesta Bowl down in Glendale, Arizona in the Oklahoma Sooners.
Few, if any, thought Boise State stood a chance against Bob Stoops’ program. The Sooners were 7.5-point favorite over the Broncos, but that wasn’t going to stop Petersen’s team from giving their all against Oklahoma.
While it took three trick plays — a hook and lateral combination, some variation of the wildcat offense with a half back pass and the cliché Statue of Liberty play –Boise State would stun Oklahoma in the second overtime period, 42-41.
Instead of kicking the PAT to force a third overtime, quarterback Jared Zabransky did the Statue of Liberty play to hand it off to running back Ian Johnson for the game-winning two-point conversion. After winning the ball game, Johnson would propose to his girlfriend, a Boise State cheerleader, on national television and she said yes. This story is too unbelievable to make up.
