MLB Trade Deadline: 30 players most likely to move
29. Rajai Davis, OF, Oakland Athletics
Rajai Davis cemented himself in Cleveland Indians history last season when he homered off Aroldis Chapman in the eighth inning of Game 7 of the World Series. Unfortunately for fans of the Tribe, Davis’ heroics weren’t enough to help the club win the title.
Now a member of the Oakland Athletics, the World Series is probably a distant memory for the 36-year-old outfielder. The A’s finished the first half of the 2017 season 39-50, giving the club the most losses in the American League. But, despite his new team’s struggles (not to mention his own), there’s still a chance Davis could end up in the postseason again.
Davis is hitting .210/.267/.308 with two home runs and 12 RBI in 69 games during his second stint in Oakland. The centerfielder is well known for his speed on the bases, having stolen 380 bases in a 12-year career. He also led the AL with 43 stolen bases in 49 attempts a year ago. Davis hasn’t run as often in 2017, but he has been successful in 15 of 19 attempts thus far – and his speed is a major asset, especially in a playoff series.
The margin for error in postseason games is razor thin, and even the threat of a stolen base attempt or a fast runner taking an extra base on a hit can put enough pressure on a defense to cause a misplay. Therefore Davis, who is playing on a one-year contract with the A’s, still has value as a pinch runner, if not a regular centerfielder and leadoff hitter, for a contending team.
