MLB Trade Deadline: 30 players most likely to move
25. Joaquin Benoit, RP, Philadelphia Phillies
Phillies reliever Joaquin Benoit joined the Blue Jays last season at the trade deadline, and the veteran right-hander posted a brilliant 0.38 ERA in 23.2 innings across 25 appearances. His good work in Toronto earned the 39-year-old a one-year, $7.5 million contract with the Phillies.
So far, Benoit hasn’t been terrific in Philadelphia. Through Saturday, Benoit has posted a 4.54 ERA and 4.13 FIP in 33.2 innings across 36 appearances. He has struck out 32 hitters, giving him a 23.0 percent strikeout that would be his lowest since 2008. Benoit has also walked 10.8 percent of the hitters he has faced (15 walks total), which would be his second worst mark since 2008. Benoit has a 12.2 percent K-BB%, which would also be the worst in nine years for the veteran reliever.
Benoit has 52 career saves, but hasn’t held the closer’s role since 2014. More comfortable in a setup role, the Phillies have used Benoit in the eighth inning primarily this year. He was a seventh inning man in Toronto down the stretch in 2016.
As an impending free agent nearing 40 years old, Benoit isn’t likely to bring back much in return in a trade. The Phillies would likely part with him for a low level prospect or for the ever popular “player to be named later” or “cash considerations.” Nevertheless, given the boost he gave the Blue Jays bullpen this time a year ago, it’s certainly worth it for a contender – especially one in desperate need of bullpen help, such as the Nationals – to take a flier on Benoit.
