4. Texas Rangers

The Rangers have been one of the more difficult teams to figure this season as they sit at 45-46 in the middle of July. When things are clicking, their offense is one of the most dangerous in baseball. The rotation is led by Yu Darvish and Cole Hamels, while Andrew Cashner has been much better than anyone could have expected. After the release of Sam Dyson, the bullpen has mostly stabilized itself.

Still, things just have not all come together for the 2017 Rangers. The lineup has too much swing-and-miss potential, which leads to long stretches of inactivity and limited offensive output. The Rangers have two full-time players in Joey Gallo and Mike Napoli batting near or under the Mendoza Line. Second baseman Rougned Odor has also struggled to make consistent contact and has not shown any signs of maturing as a hitter.

Texas is a team built to win now with Adrian Beltre as their leader. The front office will not punt on this season and deal Darvish heading into his walk year unless things really turn in the wrong direction leading into the trade deadline. The Rangers do have the talent in the minor leagues to trade for McCutchen, and would use him in left field, forcing Delino DeShields to the bench or into a split role in center field with Carlos Gomez.

McCutchen’s presence in Texas could spark the offense and set the team off on a tear heading into the final two months of the year. In a year where no one is out of the AL Wild Card hunt, the Rangers can vault themselves to the top of the pile with an impact trade for an All-Star outfielder.
