2. Arizona Diamondbacks

Despite a five-game losing streak that has spanned the All-Star break and carried over into the first week of the second half, the Diamondbacks are still in a very solid playoff position. Arizona has had the best rotation in the National League this year led by Zack Greinke, Robbie Ray and Zack Godley. Their lineup is among the deepest in baseball, and Paul Goldschmidt is having a typically-brilliant season to lead the offense.

Left field has been the one big problem spot for the Diamonbacks this year. Thirty-homer man Yasmany Tomas has been out since June with a groin injury and recently suffered a setback that will keep him out deep into August. Tomas was not even having a strong year to begin with, hitting .241/.294/.464 with eight home runs and 32 RBI in 47 games. The Diamondbacks have been lucky to receive strong seasons from bounceback candidates A.J. Pollock and David Peralta in center field and right field.

The Diamondbacks need to be aggressive and keep their foot down on this season, which has popped up out of nowhere after last season’s debacle. There’s no telling whether the rotation’s brilliance will continue beyond this season. McCutchen would fill a need in left field — a position he would be comfortable playing — while also providing insurance for the oft-injured Pollock in center.

Arizona does not have one of the top farm systems in the league, but they do have several solid Latin American infielders and an MLB-ready left-hander in top prospect Anthony Banda. The Diamonbacks could spice up a deal with the Pirates by taking closer Tony Watson off their hands in addition to McCutchen.
