One big question for every NBA team
What exactly is the Indiana Pacers’ plan moving forward?
This is about as general of a question as one could possibly ask, but it seems pretty damn relevant here. What direction are the Pacers moving in? Within the past three weeks the Pacers have turned Paul George in Victor Oladipo and Domantas Sabonias, traded for Cory Joseph and signed both Darren Collison and Bojan Bogdanovic to two year partially guaranteed deals. Indiana now has a strange mix of veterans and youngsters. Myles Turner will presumably be the cornerstone around which the Pacers will orient their future, but their approach as of now is unclear at best.
The Pacers didn’t beef up their asset cupboard by getting future picks in return for George, so they are in a curious spot now. They also didn’t go after young restricted free agents, who are obviously difficult to sign, but are increasingly attainable now that the cap crunch is underway. Instead they’ve added older role players and haven’t delineated a clear rebuilding plan.
They don’t have any long term salary on the books though, so they can pivot easily if they want to. Perhaps they’ll look to trade some of their veterans, but what teams will be willing to give up assets for any of them? Thad Young might be the only older player on this team that a playoff contender might take a chance on.
