One big question for every NBA team
Is Blake Griffin’s five-year max deal the league’s riskiest contract?
Blake Griffin didn’t drag out his final decision in free agency. He re-signed with the Clippers on the first day of free agency for a total value of about $173 million over five years. As recently as the 2015 playoffs, Blake was a surefire top ten player in the NBA. Since then he’s had two tumultuous seasons derailed by injury and many reports have indicated that he won’t be ready for the start of the season this year.
If he’s healthy Blake is well worth a max deal, but betting on Griffin’s health is a massive risk. He hasn’t played more than 67 games in a season since 2013-14, and he’ll be 33 by the time his contract expires. After re-signing Griffin, trading Chris Paul and adding Danilo Gallinari, the Clippers have essentially locked into their team for the foreseeable future. They have made Griffin the centerpiece of the team and will likely compete for a lower playoff seed over the next few years.
Last week on his podcast, Bill Simmons aptly compared the signing of Griffin to New York’s signing of Amar’e Stoudemire back in 2010. Amar’e, who had an even worse health record than Griffin, had an incredible first season with the Knicks on his five-year megadeal. Then injuries derailed his career and his contract crippled New York’s ability to change directions. If Griffin gets hurt and misses substantial time, the Clippers might be in serious trouble. They won’t have an easy way to get out of his deal.
