3. Tommy Tuberville

ESPN just hired Tuberville as a college football analyst, and approaching his 63rd birthday (Sept.18) he may simply be done coaching after a 4-8 season at Cincinnati and a resignation. He had been rumored to be considering a run for Alabama governor, so if the right coaching opportunity came Tuberville may have to consider it.

Prior to a mostly successful 10-season (1999-2008) run as coach at Auburn (85-40), Tuberville was head coach at Ole Miss from 1995-1998. He only had a 25-20 record during that stint, but it apparently was good enough to get Auburn’s attention when they were looking for a new coach.

More recently, Tuberville spent three seasons (2010-2012) as coach at Texas Tech, with a 20-17 record, and of course the last four seasons at Cincinnati (29-22 record). After winning nine games in each of his first two seasons as Bearcats ‘ coach, Tuberville won just one conference game in 2016. If he had not stepped down, or been unwilling to do so if he was prompted, a firing may have come.

Tuberville may have no desire to coach anywhere anymore, let alone go back to Ole Miss for a second go-round. But he could easily wind up on a list of candidates based on name alone.
