MLB Trade Deadline 2017: 5 best spots for Yoenis Cespedes
By John Buhler
With the Chicago Cubs looking to overtake them in the NL Central, the division-leading Milwaukee Brewers will need to fight fire with fire and get somebody really good before the MLB trade deadline to help their ball club. Could that guy be Cespedes? Potentially.
Milwaukee’s lead over the Cubs isn’t as large as it once was. While no other NL Central team has made it a point to challenge the Brewers in the division yet, you better believe that all five teams want that division crown. Here’s why.
With the way the Los Angeles Dodgers are playing atop the NL West, nobody wants to be the wild card winner that plays them in the NLDS. As July winds down, the two wild card teams project to be the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Colorado Rockies. The winner of the NL Central would likely face the NL East leader Washington Nationals in the NLDS. Keep in mind Washington has never advanced in a postseason series.
Should the Brewers outlast the Cubs and win the NL Central, there is a great chance Milwaukee will play in the NLCS. This has been a sound ball club with a deep farm system. Winning the division matters for the Brew Crew. Adding Cespedes gives them some dynamism at the plate from the outfield position. If he doesn’t pan out beyond 2017, Milwaukee could trade him for other assets, as Cespedes would have three more years on the contract he signed with the Mets.
