MLB Trade Deadline Rumors: 5 trades White Sox should make
3. Trade Anthony Swarzak
The trade that sent Robertson and Kahnle to New York left Anthony Swarzak as the best available White Sox reliever ahead of the MLB trade deadline. Swarzak, in his first season with the club after signing a minor league free agent deal before spring training, has been a pleasant surprise.
Swarzak made his MLB debut with the Minnesota Twins as a starter in 2009, when he was 23. He struggled to maintain a spot in the starting rotation, and was moved to the bullpen full-time in 2013, and found his first extended success at the big league level. In 48 games out of the bullpen as a 27-year-old, Swarzak posted a 2.91 ERA and 3.28 FIP.
Over the next three years, Swarzak bounced through three organizations, and found limited success. He posted a 4.60 ERA in 50 appearances in his final season with the Twins in 2014, saw action in 10 games with Cleveland and posted a 3.38 ERA in 2015, and followed with a 5.52 ERA in 31 innings with the Yankees last year. However, after winning a job as a reliever in Chicago before the 2017 season, he blossomed.
Through 39 games this season, the 31-year-old right-hander has a 2.36 ERA and 2.36 FIP. He has struck out 49 hitters with only 12 walks in 45.2 innings. Able to work multiple innings when necessary, Swarzak has surrendered a career low 6.9 hits per nine innings this season, along with a career high 9.7 strikeouts per nine.
Because the White Sox have little invested in him, and because he will be a free agent at the end of the season, any prospect the club receives for Swarzak would be a bonus.
