Sami Zayn vs. Mike Kanellis

What we learned: I think we learned here that Mike Kanellis is never going to be as over as his wife and will never go beyond the midcard in WWE.

I think the gimmick with he and Maria is hilarious but it’s always going to be a novelty. Don’t get me wrong, there is a place for these kinds of things in every wrestling promotion and certain people just have to fill those types of roles. I think Mike Kanellis is a talented guy and I’ll never pretend that I don’t enjoy seeing Maria in any capacity. However, he’s come in and gotten a quick win but then lost his very first match on a pay-per-view. That type of debut usually doesn’t translate into big things.

With that being said, I thought the match itself was perfectly okay and with the spot that it was in, it did what it was supposed to do. Sami Zayn did get himself a win on pay-per-view and while it’s obviously not the biggest win of his time in WWE, at least it’s something, right?

What’s next: I can’t quite tell if this thing is over or not. I suppose they would need to have a rubber match to settle things but there’s absolutely no way that match makes the SummerSlam card. As I said, Mike and Maria are going to be stuck on the lower end of things for a while but there is still a market there for Sami Zayn. I know that some people won’t agree with me on this but I’d like to see him take this small amount of momentum and turn it into a United States Championship shot against … yes, Kevin Owens. Yes, the feud has been done and done again but there’s no denying that they have chemistry. A high-profile match between those two at SummerSlam could steal the show. I’m not saying that’s what we’re going to get but the thought intrigues me.
