In addition to Sonny Gray, expect the Brewers to target some depth in the bullpen. Corey Knebel and Jacob Barnes have been pleasant surprises in relief this season, but it’s dangerous to rely so heavily on largely unproven arms.

Knebel, an All-Star for the first time at the age of 25, has been brilliant this season, posting a 1.75 ERA and 2.31 FIP with 17 saves and 81 strikeouts in 46.1 innings. Barnes was terrific early on, and didn’t allow an earned run until his 12th appearance of the season, but the 27-year-old has a 5.60 ERA since June 1.

Rookie Josh Hader has been great in relief, but the Brewers could use another lefty in the pen with Brent Suter moving into the rotation after Chase Anderson was sent to the DL with an oblique strain. As a result, the Brewers should reach out to the New York Mets about Jerry Blevins.

Blevins has a 3.16 ERA and 3.21 FIP in 48 appearances for the Mets this season, and has struck out 44 hitters in 31.1 innings. The 33-year-old is at his best against left-handed hitters, holding them to a .173/.230/.185 slash with only one extra-base hit in 87 plate appearances this season. Blevins has struck out 32 of the 87 lefties he has faced through Sunday – a stellar 36.8 percent strikeout rate.

Finally, the Brewers farm system could play a crucial role in helping the Angels acquire help at first base, and in return, Milwaukee would add some pop and veteran leadership in the outfield with Curtis Grandson.
