Every MLB team’s Mount Rushmore
New York Yankees
Has “El Capitan” done the impossible and earned a spot on the New York Yankees Mount Rushmore, the most of impressive of its kind in the MLB?
Babe Ruth is without question the most significant Yankee of all-time. He turned the team into Murderer’s Row. Ruth literally helped build the original Yankee Stadium. It’s hard to see where the Yankees would be today if it wasn’t for George Herman Ruth.
Lou Gehrig held the consecutive games mark until a disease (named after him, tragically) ended his career. For many years, Ruth and his left-handed pal “The Iron Horse” terrorized pitchers. Gehrig led the league in homers twice and RBIs five times, winning two MVPs in the process.
“Joltin'” Joe DiMaggio was the original Broadway Joe. He is most famous for holding the streak for most consecutive games with a hit. DiMaggio was the king of New York, leading the Yankees on the field and staying in the spotlight off of it. Despite missing three years due to military service, he still won three MVPs and two batting titles.
Derek Jeter beat out a ton of other worthy candidates to get the final spot on this monument. The second Yankee Stadium is often referred to as “The House That Jeter Built”. Considering when “number two” came to New York and how their rise to the top coincided with his arrival, he’s one of the most significant athletes in the Big Apple.
Honorable mentions: You could make a second Mount Rushmore with all the Yankees legends. Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, Mariano Rivera and Whitey Ford would be better than most MLB team’s Mount Rushmores. There are way too many other ones to name.
