Pittsburgh Pirates

Is a certain 1960 World Series hero a part of the Pittsburgh Pirates Mount Rushmore, which features four Hall of Fame MLB players?

Roberto Clemente is the name everyone thinks of as for as the Pirates. He had a cannon of an arm and retired with 3,000 hits. Clemente died in a plane crash while delivering supplies to earthquake victims. He led the Pirates to two World Series titles, winning the 1971 Series MVP in the process. Clemente also won the 1966 NL MVP, along with 12 Gold Gloves.

Honus Wagner is most famous for having the most valuable baseball card in history. He starred for the Pirates back in the early part of the 21st century and was one of the first MLB stars. Wagner won eight batting titles. He was the city of Pittsburgh’s first major sports star.

Willie Stargell represents the “We Are Family” Pirates who twice took down the Baltimore Orioles in the World Series. He won an MVP in 1979, sharing the award with Keith Hernandez. A noted power hitter, Stargell’s best performance came in the 1979 postseason when he had five homers in 10 games.

Bill Mazeroski gets the nod for the fourth spot. There are other deserving candidates for sure, but none of them mean more to the Pirates than Maz. He hit the most famous home run in Pittsburgh history, a walk off in Game 7 of the 1960 World Series. Mazeroski is the Pirates’ career defensive bWAR leader.

Honorable mentions: Paul Waner had some excellent years in Pittsburgh. Ralph Kiner likely would have had the fourth spot wrapped up if it wasn’t for Maz’s historic home run.
