16. Boston Red Sox

The Curse of the Bambino was obviously one of the most unlucky curses in sports history, and it gave the Boston Red Sox an 86-year drought between World Series titles. However, once they got the monkey off their back, they had some good fortune on their side to make up for lost time.

The 2003 Red Sox had one of the unluckier finishes in the team’s history, when Grady Little left Pedro Martinez in the game a little too long, and blew the team’s chance at returning to the World Series. They bounced back in 2004, and got a rematch with the New York Yankees in the ALCS just one year after the Little incident.

The Yankees took a 3-0 series lead, and it looked like we’d see more misfortune for the Red Sox. However, as everyone knows, the story didn’t end there, and the Red Sox pulled off the craziest, and possibly luckiest, comeback in sports history.

Most will say the four-game comeback was all skill, but the fact that they had David Ortiz on their roster for that run before his true fame started, and saw the birth of a legend with consecutive clutch hits in back-to-back nights was very unlikely.

From that comeback on, we’ve seen the Red Sox pull off three World Series championship runs, and were lucky enough to play a Colorado Rockies team in their 2007 run that weren’t even close to the talent the Sox had. Although that’s just how the sports world, and you play who you get, it’s still a key factor to mention how lucky the team was for who they played in the World Series each time.
