Los Angeles Chargers first-round pick Mike Williams will miss all of training camp due to a bulging disc in his back.

Mike Williams came into the draft process with red flags in terms of durability as he fractured his neck in 2015 with Clemson. After a dominating 2016 campaign which included a national championship season, Williams catapulted into the first round being selected by the Chargers No. 7 overall.

Now Williams’ medicals have flared up again as he is dealing with a nagging building disc in his back. The back injury will keep the wide receiver sidelined for the rest of training camp. Adam Schefter of ESPN first broke the story via press release from the Chargers:

The Chargers couldn’t have worse luck with receivers as Keenan Allen looks to rebound from a torn ACL is the season opener in 2016. With Allen returning, the Chargers have a steady one-two punch with Williams in the fold. Los Angeles, fortunately, does have some depth at the position as Tyrell Williams, Artavis Scott, Dontrelle Inman, and Travis Benjamin are also on the roster. Our NFL expert Matt Verderame has high hopes for Williams perfect complement to Allen.

Williams, 22, was the second receiver drafted in 2017 behind Western Michigan’s Corey Davis. The Clemson wide out comes from a decorated program that has produced great players at the position such as DeAndre Hopkins, Martavis Bryant, and Sammy Watkins. However, with any rookie, Williams success in the NFL isn’t guaranteed.

At 6-foot-4, 218 pounds, Williams will be an immediate red zone threat. His top end speed, on the other hand, is a concern as he did not participate in the 40-yard dash at the combine. That proved to be a bad omen a year ago when Laquon Treadwell did not run at the combine and barely saw the field with the Vikings. The first priority for Williams in 2017 will be staying healthy.
