30 little-known facts about Floyd Mayweather Jr.
21. Mayweather has not fought outside of Las Vegas since 2005
Floyd Mayweather Jr. has become synonymous with Las Vegas, Nevada, and Sin City has treated him well. Mayweather last fought elsewhere in 2005 when he took on Sharmba Mitchell at, oddly enough, the Rose Garden in Portland, Oregon — hardly a boxing hotbed.
Interestingly, the Mitchell bout was the last in a series of six fights that took place outside of Las Vegas, with Mayweather’s cringe-inducing shellacking of Arturo Gatti at Atlantic City’s Boardwalk Hall serving as the marquee contest during that stretch. Prior to these bouts, Mayweather contested his crucial rematch against Jose Luis Castillo, who many feel clearly defeated “Money,” at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas in December of 2002.
The MGM Grand Garden Arena became Mayweather’s de facto home, hosting his last 10 fights. When Mayweather tangles with Conor McGregor, it will mark his debut at the glittering T-Mobile Arena, which has naturally become the marquee venue for championship prizefighting in a city synonymous with boxing.
Although he originally hails from Grand Rapids, Michigan, Mayweather is firmly embedded in Las Vegas. He obviously owns property, including his ostentatious mansion, and trains at the Mayweather Boxing Club, and he’s also involved in philanthropic endeavors in the city. And let’s just say that his propensity for placing astronomical bets on sporting events is nicely accommodated in his adopted home, where he’s seemingly become a sports franchise unto himself.
