4. Tony Romo

This one is a bit out of left field, with Romo retiring and taking over as the No. 1 NFL booth analyst for CBS alongside Jim Nantz. Injuries that limited him to five games in 2015 and 2016, age (37) and a prime broadcasting job make him likely to be content in retirement, and Romo has said he is done playing.

But, there’s always a chance Romo could be talked into re-thinking his definite retirement stance. Going back to the Cowboys is obvious if Dak Prescott were to get hurt, but the Dolphins have a solid situation to offer and a more immediate potential need to fill.

2014 was a pretty long time ago now. But Romo threw for over 3,700 yards with 34 touchdowns and just nine interceptions while completing a career-best 69.9 percent of his passes for the Cowboys that season. A decline in skills for a quarterback can come fast (see Peyton Manning), but it’s not a stretch to say Romo can still be a functional signal caller in the right situation.

If Tannehill is facing a long (or season-long) absence, the Dolphins should at least see where Romo is at on the play or not-to-play spectrum right now. The worst thing that can come is a rejection, but that would not be so bad.
