What would top soccer players be worth in Adam Smith’s barter economy?
Wayne Rooney: A little peace and quiet
How hard is it to get some peace and quiet these days? With all these cell phones and laptops and Tweetbooks, people can’t get a moment just to think. Whatever happened to just a little me-time? It seems like everything is one big distraction.
You know what I would give up for peace and quiet? Former England captain Wayne Rooney. Sure, he’s not the player he once was, when he led Manchester United to five Premier League titles. But I’m just asking for like five minutes to be alone with my thoughts.
The once and future Everton star has been maligned for a perceived lack of effort of late, but remember that he scored 53 international goals with England. It’s easy to forget how great a player was just because they tail off at the end of their career. It’s also easy to forget how important just FIVE MINUTES TO YOURSELF IS.
I mean, come on. Does my boss have to call in the middle of my day off? And what for? Because my idiot coworker Gary can’t find where I left the files. Yeah, like this is my fault. I leave them in the same place whenever I’m out of the office, and Gary forgets every time. Leave me alone or I’m calling HR.
Seriously, it’s like people these days don’t respect personal space. You know what else they don’t respect? Wayne Rooney. Sure, he’s maybe a deeply flawed person off the field, but that’s not what we’re talking about. He’s one of the all-time greats, whether you like it or not. Gary.
