6. Clayton Kershaw

Pitchers are the most important position in baseball, and Kershaw is the best starting pitcher in the league. It’s no coincidence, either, that pitchers occupy seven of the top 10 MLB salaries. If you want Kershaw, you’ll have to fork over some serious money for him.

Seeing an opposing team hit against Kershaw can be demoralizing sometimes. If the Dodgers put up two or three runs in the game, it could already be over. He’s already achieved so much at the age of 29, including an MVP, three Cy Youngs, a Triple Crown and a no-hitter. Yet some people try to discredit all of that by claiming he doesn’t show up in the playoffs.

It’s true that Kershaw doesn’t live up to his own lofty standards come October, but that doesn’t make him a bad postseason pitcher. He still has strong postseason numbers, such as 10.9 strikeouts per 9 and a 1.157 WHIP. He’s also had some great playoff moments, including shutting the door in Game 4 of the 2015 NLDS, and closing Game 5 against the Nationals after starting Game 4.

It says a lot about the Dodgers that they haven’t been able to win a World Series with Kershaw as their ace. But with the team chugging along despite his injury, they have the necessary depth around him to seriously go for it this year.

Kershaw’s not only one of the most recognizable names in baseball, he’s the highest paid player. Anyone who can single-handedly win his team games and is the most dominant at their position should be highly coveted.
