10 young players to watch
By James Dudko
9. Tammy Abraham, striker, Swansea
Tammy Abraham wasn’t getting game time at Chelsea, so he took a loan move to Swansea. The Swans can be thankful since the 19-year-old’s career seems to be on an upward trajectory.
He scored for fun with Championship outfit Bristol City last season. Then he helped England’s U21 side reach the semifinal of the European Under-21 Championship.
Those performances at international level brought Abraham to the attention of a wider audience. What viewers saw was a willing target man prepared to occupy multiple defenders, play with his back to goal and tirelessly work the line.
Abraham is a force in the air, but also has the pace to spin in behind. Those qualities should quickly endear him to Swansea boss Paul Clement.
The striker has already promised to build on what he did last season. He told the Swans official website, via Phil Blanche of the London Evening Standard, how well he’ll work with Clement:
"When the gaffer (Clement) came round to my house he described what he wants from this season. It fits my style of play as well. It is a nice place to get your head down and really focus on your game. That’s what I want to do this season."
It’s become increasingly difficult for academy players to get their chances at Chelsea. Yet if Abraham is prolific for Swansea, one of England’s brightest young strikers may be able to secure a permanent move to a Premier League side willing to start him regularly.
