Alonzo Mourning

C, Georgetown

No. 2 overall pick in 1992

1991-92 Georgetown stats (Senior): 21.3 points, 10.7 rebounds, 1.7 assists, 5.0 blocks per game (Lost in 2nd round to Florida State)

Mourning played out of position for three years next to Mutombo, and then averaged five blocks per game in his opportunity to start at center for the 1992 Hoyas. He was one of college basketball’s best two-way center prospects of the early ’90s, and staying until his senior season meant that he came into the league NBA ready (Averaged 21/10 w/ four blocks as a rookie). In his case, it’s a good thing he did, because he was able to fully flesh out what was a limited offensive game early in his college tenure.

Mourning developed a useful mid-range shot because of his fit next to Mutombo, and that allowed him to stretch out to 15-feet and have use as an early pick-and-pop prototype. His 249-pound build and 7-foot-6 wingspan helped him become a skilled roll man, and he had a fairly well-developed post game as well. You probably couldn’t utilize Mourning as a primary offensive option in today’s game due to his lack of advanced passing ability, but he certainly could be a secondary option on a good team. That’s all you’d need from him, as what he’s giving you on the defensive end makes up for any lack of advanced offensive polish.
