Wilson Chandler

SF, DePaul

No. 23 overall pick in 2007

2006-07 DePaul stats (Sophomore): 14.6 points, 6.9 rebounds per game (missed NCAA Tournament)

DePaul’s lone entry on this list, Chandler narrowly edged out Jeff Green as the last wing thanks to his athleticism. He’s this draft’s version of Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot — a high-upside wing who’s athleticism and measurables act as a counterbalance measure to an underwhelming skill profile. Chandler presented a unique case: a wing this athletic on a team this mediocre (DePaul finished eighth in the Big East in 07) should have been carrying more of a load than Chandler did. Inconsistency plagued his early career, as he took plays off defensively and coasted through some other games. But when he was on, he was electric. A brilliant off-ball cutter, Chandler could blow by defenders and finish easily over bigs at the rim. His jumper mechanics were solid, lending to his progression being a league-average 3-point shooter in today’s NBA despite just hitting 33.3 percent as a sophomore. And he had all the defensive tools you could ask for, despite general apathy that frequently hid true skill.

Chandler flew under the radar back then thanks to a mediocre team that often played him out of position as a four or even a nominal center. Put him in the Draft today, though, and teams would fall in love with his upside as a 3-and-D prototype that would at least be a devastating transition finisher and versatile lineup option early on. Chandler’s a definite upside play that NBA teams would drool over today. Finally, something the Knicks were ahead of the curve on.
