Mayweather vs. McGregor: 5 keys to victory for Floyd Mayweather
1. Exploit McGregor’s Inexperience
Conor McGregor is a world class athlete. He’s well conditioned, strong and has combat experience. His biggest Achilles heel is that he has NO professional boxing experience.
During his youth in Dublin, Ireland, McGregor trained at the Crumlin Boxing Club. I’m not saying that he is entirely untrained as a boxer, but he lacks professional experience. Fighting as a professional boxer is a far cry from sparring in a gym.
Floyd Mayweather has 387 rounds of professional boxing under his belt. He has fought skilled boxers, brawlers, counter-punchers, southpaws, etc. He has been in against every type of boxer there is. There is nothing new that Conor McGregor can show Mayweather. This will be Mayweather’s biggest asset.
An MMA championship bout contains 25 minutes of fight time. A boxing championship bout has 36 minutes of fight time. Mayweather knows how to pace himself over the course of 12 rounds, but McGregor doesn’t. Mayweather needs to get McGregor to expend a lot of energy in the early rounds without taking any serious damage. His footwork and experience as a counterpuncher will allow him to elude McGregor throughout their fight.
McGregor’s inexperience in the boxing ring means that he will make mistakes. If McGregor leaves himself open for attack, Mayweather will make him pay.
McGregor is the bigger, stronger fighter, but muscles don’t win boxing matches—skills do. The only fighter in this boxing match who has a mastered set of boxing skills is Floyd Mayweather. This fight will be decided by who has the most boxing experience, not the most powerful punch.
