Carolina Panthers: Cam Newton

Cam Newton has fallen off a bit from his spot as one of the league’s best quarterbacks after his MVP season, and that was even evident with his ratings drop throughout last season in Madden NFL 17, but he was a stud when the game was first released.

Newton is one of the most fun quarterbacks to watch in the NFL in real life, with his combination of size, speed and some solid throwing strength making him a real threat in multiple different areas on the field. That’s why it wasn’t surprising for him to get such a high rating in last year’s game, and making him one of the most fun Carolina Panthers players to ever appear in the game.

At the time of the game’s release last year, Newton had a 94 overall rating with an insane 86 speed rating and 89 acceleration rating to help him torch defenses if he decided to scramble. Unfortunately, as the Panthers season fell apart, so did Newton’s rating in the game. He dropped 10 points overall to a 84 overall, but that doesn’t take away from how fun his stats were at the beginning of the game.

You could make a serious case in an argument for Steve Smith as the best Panthers player in Madden history, but the spotlight will almost always go to a team’s quarterback over a wide receiver. The same thing happened here, with Newton getting the top spot, but he’s been one of the most fun players to use in any Madden roster over the last few years.
