NFL power rankings: Who is biggest threat to Patriots?
By Brad Weiss
For years, it has been the Blake Bortles show in Jacksonville. Throughout his very inconsistent career, the organization has stuck by him, hoping that he would show the kind of talent that made him a first round draft pick. However, the support for Bortles is starting to waver, and he is no longer considered a lock to be the team’s starting quarterback when they open up their season next month.
Considering the amount of talent this Jaguars team has on both sides of the ball, it is hard to rank them so low. But when you cannot get consistent play from your quarterback, and both Bortles and Chad Henne are battling for the starting job, you cannot expect a big season from Jacksonville in 2017. In addition, the rest of the teams in the AFC South could all challenge for the division, making this a long season for the Jags.
First-round running back Leonard Fournette originally said that the NFL was easy, and then got hurt and is questionable for the beginning of the season. That would be another big blow to a Jaguars team that was probably going to rely on the rush more in 2017. The team does have two very good wide receivers in Allen Robinson and Allen Hurns, but they need someone to get them the ball.
Like they did last season, the Jaguars went out and spent money bolstering their defense, which should have their work cut out for them this season. Guys like A.J. Bouye and Calais Campbell are very nice additions, but the offense may be too tough to overcome. Head coach Doug Marrone already looks weathered by the season, and it is only Week 2 of the preseason.
