13. The Rockies come from nowhere, 2007

After experiencing initial success following their addition to the league in 1993, the Colorado Rockies went through a long stretch of losing seasons while attempting to figure out how to build a pitching staff to succeed in Coors Field. The Rockies made the playoffs in 1995 as a Wild Card, but had six losing seasons in a row from 2001 to 2006.

In 2007, there was no question that the Rockies could hit. Their lineup featured Troy Tulowitzki, Carlos Gonzalez and Matt Holliday in his prime. Even with that offense, the Rockies were still struggling to pitch the ball well enough to lock down a playoff spot for most of the year. On September 15, they lost their third game in a row to fall to 76-72 and were 6.5 games behind the San Diego Padres.

From that point on, the Rockies caught some type of magic and won 13 of their final 14 games to finish 90-72 in a tie with the Padres for the Wild Card. The Padres had looked like an easy division winner a few weeks prior, but blew up down the stretch.

The one-game playoff for the Wild Card was a Coors Field classic. The Rox won 9-8 after going down 8-6 in the 13th inning. Jamey Carroll delivered the winning run on a sacrifice fly (you be the judge of whether or not Holliday actually touched the plate), and the Rockies carried their momentum all the way to the World Series where they were shut down by the Boston Red Sox.
