5. Mohamed Salah, Liverpool

£37.80 million from Roma

The Egyptian wide forward has been on Liverpool’s radar for a long time. The Reds attempted to sign Salah back in the 2013-14 winter transfer window. He chose Chelsea though, and Brendan Rodgers was left to wonder what might have been. As Liverpool missed out on the title by two points that season, the fact that they didn’t sign Salah is even more sickening to Kopites.

Salah has probably since rued his decision to move to west London too. He only made 19 appearances for the Blues. It took a move to Italy for him to rejuvenate his career, and he did so in some style.

He racked up 15 goals and 11 assists in the league for Roma in 2016-17. If Michael Edwards and Liverpool’s transfer committee had somehow forgotten Salah, he served up a fine reminder last season.

Despite some initial scepticism regarding the transfer of Sadio Mané 12 months ago, Liverpool fans soon realised that they needed a back up for when he wasn’t available. It’s too simplistic to say that’s why the Reds have signed Salah, but he provides a lot of the same dangers to the opposition. His very presence will create more space for Mané when they play together. That could be worth a great deal to Liverpool’s chances of success this year.

Salah’s main asset is pace. Liverpool were bereft of speed up top when Mané was absent in 2016-17, but that won’t be an issue this time around. In the current wild market, Salah looks an absolute steal at under £40 million.
