4. Romelu Lukaku, Manchester United

£76.23 million from Everton

Manchester United did not have a good campaign in the Premier League in 2016-17. A sixth placed finish was worse than Louis van Gaal mustered in his two seasons at Old Trafford. United may have only lost once at home last season, but they drew a remarkable 10 games. It proved very costly to any ambitions they had towards a decent league finish.

They were not dreadful in most of those games though, and deserved to win the majority of them. The problem was not a lack of chances, it was a case of poor finishing frequently letting them down.

Romelu Lukaku should correct that. The Belgian was named the best forward in the Premier League last season by this website. He scored in 16 different matches, and netted a non-penalty goal every 117 minutes. With impressive stats like those, a move was always likely.

There’s no doubt he’ll get more chances, and better quality ones, at United. He has already displayed his sharp shooting for his new club. He had two (Opta-defined) clear-cut chances against West Ham on the opening weekend, and stuck them both away. Lukaku will also bring power and movement to United’s frontline this season. His physical presence is no doubt one of the reasons he appealed to Jose Mourinho.

The former Toffee is accused of going missing in big games, but that is not the case. He scored more (non-penalty) goals against the top six than the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Diego Costa, Harry Kane and Alexis Sanchez did last season. If Lukaku remembered his shooting boots when moving from Merseyside to Manchester, then United will have a great season.
