2. Youri Tielemans, Monaco

£22.50 million from Anderlecht

A lot has been made of the players who have left Monaco this summer. The French champions have lost many of their heroes of their title-winning campaign. The likes of Benjamin Mendy, Bernardo Silva and Tiemoué Bakayoko have all moved to England.

But they have also brought in some very good players too. Stevan Jovetic and Keita Balde have both left Italy to sign for Monaco. Their best import this summer has come from Belgium though: Youri Tielemans.

The central midfielder was previously at Anderlecht, and was voted Belgium’s young player of the year. He scored 13 goals and assisted 13 more, which helped them to win the Belgian title. Tielemans is also the youngest Belgian to play in the Champions League.

Like so many players on this countdown, he was reportedly on the radar of the Manchester clubs. It was Monaco who sealed the deal though.

It’s a sensible choice by the player. He’d have no guarantee of regular soccer in Manchester, whereas this way he can continue to build his career. He’s only 20 after all, and frequently appears in countdowns of the best young players in world soccer.

A couple of good years in France will see him progress to a bigger club when he’s ready. He has already assisted a goal against PSG, which should endear him to the Monaco fans pretty rapidly.

He seems to have it all. Tielemans is quick, good with both feet and he has a fierce shot on him. It will be fascinating to see how far he can go over the next few years.
