San Francisco Giants: Andrew Suarez

It has truly been an awful year for the Giants, and to make matters worse, their two top prospects who could come up in September have been injured most of the year. Christian Arroyo and Tyler Beede. Arroyo broke his hand and wrist while Beede has been dealing with a groin injury. Beede is ticketed to pitch in the AFL.

The Giants will have to look further down their prospect ranks to find someone ready to call up to the big leagues. Left-hander Andrew Suarez has dominated every level of the minor leagues since the Giants made him a second-round pick out of Miami in 2015. The 24-year-old has a 3.15 career ERA in the minors, including 2.96 this year at Triple-A.

Suarez throws four solid pitches and sits between 89-93 with his fastball. He can touch 95 when he reaches back for something extra, but would overall fall into the finesse category based on his velocity and arsenal. He throws a very good slider that is his best pitch and also has a respectable curveball. If he is able to locate in the lower half of the strike zone, Suarez can be very effective.

The time has come for the Giants to begin considering and evaluating all of their options for the 2018 starting rotation. Matt Cain was bumped out weeks ago, but what’s keeping Matt Moore and Ty Blach in now? The Giants may also want to consider trying a six-man rotation as this awful season comes to a merciful end.
