Baltimore Orioles: Pedro Alvarez

The Orioles have made strides in pulling their farm system up from the dregs of MLB’s lower tier, but they are still short on real impact talent that can step right in and impact the pennant race this year. When the active rosters do expand to 40, there are a few easy choices that will be back with the big club immediately, including Joey Rickard and Alec Asher. Neat.

Looking for a player down in Triple-A that might actually do something big for the Orioles as they try to capture a Wild Card, let’s turn our attention to Pedro Alvarez, who spent the entire 2016 season platooning at DH for the O’s.

After a fairly successful first season as a pure platoon option where he hit .251/.326/.522 with 21 home runs against right-handers, Alvarez was unable to find a job with an MLB team and came back to the Orioles on a minors deal. He has spent the whole year at Triple-A and has 26 home runs in 134 games.

Alvarez still has ridiculous power from the left side of the plate — the one thing the Orioles are lacking on their bench right now. With expanded rosters, the fact that he has no value as a defender does not matter. After dutifully playing at Triple-A coming off a season where he homered once every 15 at-bats, Pedro Alvarez will get another chance with the Orioles.
