Premier League 2017-18: Ranking the transfer windows of all 20 teams
By James Dudko
6. Liverpool
Notable Ins: Mohamed Salah, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain
Notable Outs: Mamadou Sakho, Lucas Leiva, Divock Origi
Like City, Liverpool appear irresistible in attacking areas, but vulnerable at the back. Events during the summer transfer window haven’t altered the disjointed shape of this team.
Liverpool’s front line has been made even more potent by the arrival of Mohamed Salah. The Egypt winger has contributed goals and assists for manager Jurgen Klopp’s free-flowing side.
Goals and assists are also what Klopp will be counting on from Oxlade-Chamberlain. However, Klopp and fans of the Reds shouldn’t get their hopes up too much.
After all, Oxlade-Chamberlain scored just nine times and registered a mere 14 assists in six seasons of Premier League action with Arsenal, per the division’s official website.
Then there’s the not-so small issue of where Oxlade-Chamberlain will play in an attacking midfield rotation already congested. Liverpool kept star No. 10 Philippe Coutinho out of Barcelona’s clutches, at least for now.
Coutinho joins Adam Lallana, Emre Can and Georginio Wijnaldum to give Klopp a plethora of playmakers.
These considerations make the decision to spend up to £40 million on Oxlade-Chamberlain a quizzical one.
Questions also have to be raised about the decision to ditch Sakho, who was still the best center-back in the squad, despite a lengthy fallout with Klopp.
Still, Liverpool’s manager deserves credit for keeping creative talisman Coutinho. He also boldly boosted arguably the best attack in the league by spending big on Salah, who is a superb complement to fellow wide forward Sadio Mane.
