19. West Ham

Notbale Ins: Javier Hernandez, Marko Arnautovic, Joe Hart, Pablo Zabaleta

Notable Outs: Enner Valencia, Reece Oxford, Darren Randolph, Havard Nordtveit, Ashley Fletcher, Robert Snodgrass

The Hammers may have impressed many when they signed former Manchester United striker Javier Hernandez. However, West Ham rank near the bottom of this list for not putting the right players around the prolific Mexican.

Part of the problem has been the quality of some of the players West Ham lost this summer. A striker with the pace and movement of Enner Valencia would have dovetailed superbly with ‘Chicharito.’

Similarly, Robert Snodgrass is a playmaker with underrated vision. His passes would have been vital in the supply line dedicated to creating chances for Hernandez.

It was also strange to see the Hammers depart with so many promising younger players. Reece Oxford, still just 18, was sent to Borussia Monchengladbach on loan. Meanwhile, the club seemed to give up too soon on the qualities of 21-year-old target man Ashley Fletcher.

Further back, versatile Havard Nordtveit lasted just one season at the club, while a solid stopper like Darren Randolph was moved on. Randolph’s departure was to make way for Manchester City loanee Joe Hart, who has conceded nine times in three matches as a Hammer.

Hart’s former City colleague Pablo Zabaleta looks past his best at 32. Then there’s Marko Arnautovic, the club-record, £25-million man signed to partner Hernandez.

So far all West Ham have gotten for their hefty investment is a red card and a suspension from the notoriously temperamental Arnautovic.

Like Palace, it’s hardly surprising West Ham have lost all three matches to start the new season.
