As expected between a neutral site game between two teams right next to each other in the preseason rankings, Las Vegas is projecting a close game. SportsbookReview.com currently pegs the Hokies as the -4 favorite against the Mountaineers, likely due to their superior defensive play despite all the losses on the other side of the ball. Still, oddsmakers clearly respect the combination of West Virginia’s lethal backfield and the flashy transfer name in Grier enough to keep Virginia Tech as a one-score favorite.

While it seems strange for a game between Fuente and Dana Holgorsen, Sunday’s game could be a low-scoring affair.  The opening over/under was set at 53 points, reflecting the inexperienced quarterback play, so-so offensive lines, and thin wide receiver depth for both rosters.  West Virginia lost the vast majority of its defensive production from a solid unit a year ago, but could still find success against a Hokies offense that has plenty of question marks.
