Sam Darnold

QB, USC

The USC Trojans were tested for three quarters against the Western Michigan Broncos at home to begin the season. The two teams were tied entering the fourth quarter and Sam Darnold hadn’t really put up the numbers expected out of him yet.

However, minus one absolutely ridiculous interception, it wasn’t the worst day from Darnold. He still managed the game well and commanded the field with a presence. He put his team in position to run away with the game late, including connecting with receiver Deontay Burnett on some big passes.

While statistically, it wasn’t anything that’s going to jump off the page, Darnold showed that same poise that everyone has become used to in the victory. In the end, he saved his better passes on the day for the fourth and final quarter.

It’s also important to remember that there is still a ton of talent left on the Western Michigan team that ended up going to the Cotton Bowl last season. This wasn’t going to be a walk in the park by any stretch.

It’s very important to stress that while it wasn’t the best season debut ever, he still only has a limited number of starts under his belt. And for being one of hit lesser starts, it still wasn’t completely the worst either.

It was a perfect first week warm-up for the Trojans. Now, Darnold gets his chance to take down Stanford and add another notch to his belt against a stout team led by David Shaw. This will be a great chance for him to keep elevating his legend.
